AviationApp Privacy Policy
Effective Date: May 27, 2025
Welcome to AviationApp ("the App"), developed by Steve Keano ("we," "us," or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your information when you use our App. We are committed to safeguarding your privacy and ensuring transparency, especially as our App may be used by audiences including children under 13, in compliance with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
1. Information We Collect
We collect the following types of information to provide and improve the App’s functionality:
- Location Data: The App collects precise location information (latitude, longitude, altitude, and speed) to provide Defined Minimum Maneuvering Speed (DMMS) alerts and identify the closest airport. This data is accessed only with your explicit permission and when the App is in use or running in the background (with foreground service permission).
- User Preferences: We store user settings, such as DMMS value, warning label text, TTS alert text, message frequency, and skull display preference, locally on your device using app preferences.
- Device Information: We may collect device-specific information (e.g., device model, operating system version) to ensure compatibility and optimize performance.
Note for Users Under 13: If you are under 13, we require verifiable parental consent before collecting location data, as per COPPA requirements. Parents or guardians can contact us at privacy@aviationapp.com to provide consent or request data deletion.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information for the following purposes:
- Provide DMMS Alerts: Location data is used to calculate your aircraft’s speed, altitude, and proximity to airports, triggering alerts (visual, audio, or TTS) when your speed falls below the DMMS threshold.
- Airport Proximity: We use location data to identify the closest airport and its elevation, enabling altitude-based alert suppression (e.g., disabling alerts when less than 10 feet above airport elevation).
- Personalization: User preferences customize the App’s behavior, such as alert frequency and warning display.
- App Improvement: Device information helps us diagnose issues and enhance the App’s performance.
3. Data Sharing and Disclosure
We do not share, sell, or disclose your personal information to third parties, except in the following cases:
- Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law or in response to legal processes (e.g., court orders).
- Service Providers: We may use trusted service providers (e.g., cloud storage for crash logs) who are contractually obligated to protect your data. No personal location data is shared with these providers.
4. Data Storage and Security
All data (location, preferences) is stored locally on your device. We implement reasonable security measures to protect against unauthorized access, alteration, or deletion. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
5. Children’s Privacy (COPPA Compliance)
The App may be used by children under 13, and we are committed to COPPA compliance. We:
- Obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting location data from users under 13.
- Limit data collection to what is necessary for the App’s functionality (e.g., location for DMMS alerts).
- Do not share children’s data with third parties, except as required by law.
- Allow parents to review, delete, or refuse further data collection by contacting privacy@aviationapp.com.
6. Your Choices
You can control data collection as follows:
- Location Permissions: Disable location access in your device settings, but this will prevent DMMS alerts and airport proximity features.
- Preferences: Modify or reset settings (e.g., DMMS value, TTS alerts) within the App’s Options page.
- Data Deletion: Uninstall the App to delete all locally stored data. Contact us to ensure no residual data remains.
7. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. Updated policies will be posted in the App’s store listing, with the effective date noted. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the new policy.
